The town of St George is located 550 km from Brisbane via Goondiwindi, or 509 km via Dalby. St George has been called the ‘Inland Fishing Capital’ of Queensland. St George is situated on the banks of the Balonne River. With a population of 3,800 residents, St George has approximately 600 to 800 members of their community that are Aboriginal.
The areas surrounding the town provide a wonderful natural habitat for native birds and animals. Jacaranda and Bauhinia trees bring wonderful colour to St George in spring. The Balonne River, Beardmore Dam and Jack Taylor Weir present an inland aquatic playground for locals and visitors alike. There are a number of fishing spots which yield catches of Murray Cod and Yellowbelly.
There are quite a number of tourist locations including Jack Taylor Weir, Beardmore Dam, Gully Hotel (45 kilometres south) and Riversands Winery.
St George’s population tends to expand in the shearing, cotton and fruit seasons, with a lot of seasonal work available for shearers, cotton chippers and grape pickers.
